AS: What is your medium of choice?
KA: Primarily, I am a fiber artist and love working in textiles overall. AS: How did you get started? KA: We raise sheep and have bred them for their wool, so in effect I produce my own medium! AS: What are some of your greatest inspirations? KA: I get my inspiration from a variety of things, but mostly nature, fantasy, and whimsy. However I do enjoy making things that are fun and functional like felted soaps and pet pods. AS: Do you have a favorite piece of work that you have done? KA: Tie! Betty the Yeti was the most fun piece because of the creative aspect, but my squirrel is another favorite due to the technical aspects that I learned and accomplished. ![]() For 2020 we would like to give a big Art Spot welcome to our newest Resident Artist Kim Anderson! Kim became a fiber artist as the direct result of owning sheep for the past 15 years. She has enjoyed all aspects of raising the sheep and exploring and improving the various techniques from masters associated with the fiber arts. From washing and hand processing the wool, to carding, spinning, dyeing, weaving, wet felting, nuno felting, and needle felting, Kim has continued to learn and teach what she knows. She is the President of the Canton Fiber Arts guild and has been a member for about 6 years. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Mount Union and worked in various school systems for a number of years. Currently Kim practices her art, teaches, participates in local art shows, gives programs for clubs, and vends at juried shows. Minerva’s Market Street Art Spot and Sandy Springs Brewery proudly present our December 2019 Opening Show and Reception, “12 Days ’Til Christmas“, a celebration of upscale, one of a kind, affordable art and craft from the Resident Artists at the Market Street Art Spot.
Each of the Resident Artists has created a bevy of works at a price everyone can afford: $100 or less. Yet the work is of a quality that would sell for three to five times the price at galleries in cities like Canton, Cleveland or New York. No venue in Stark County presents work of such high quality and low price and just in time for the Christmas season. The Reception and show on December 13, 2019 from 5 to 9pm will give everyone an entertaining evening to buy the perfect gift and still have 12 days ’til Christmas. Sandy Springs Brewery will sponsor the December, 2019 opening reception and entertainment. This is the 107th consecutive featured artist opening on second Friday at the Market Street Art Spot. An acoustic group featuring All -Minerva musicians Tom Freeland on lead guitar, Bob Harris on bass guitar, Ton Lally on percussions and vocalist Andrew McNuttf will provide live music and song. In addition to the Resident Artist’s artwork in the Front Gallery, throughout the gallery the Art Spot will feature the works of the Art Spot’s Resident Artists:Kim Anderson (weaver, fabric artist), Anna Rather (printmaker, painter), Michelle Mulligan ( oil painter), Laura Donnelly (potter, painter), Marty Chapman (woodturner), Judith Singer (raku potter) and Susan Crawford (illustrator and calligrapher). Since 2011, The Art Spot has showcased the work of its Resident Artists and featured local artists as well as 30 to 35 Display Artists from across Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York. The Market Street Art Spot at 217 North Market Street, Minerva, is a collaborative gallery and continues to be open for regular business on Fridays and Saturday from 1pm to 6pm. The display of “12 Days ’til Christmas”, in the Front Gallery will continue at the Art Spot through January 4, 2020. The Market Street Art Spot is a collaborating partner with Arts in Stark and Carroll County Arts, the Village of Minerva, Minerva Local Schools and the Minerva Area Chamber of Commerce. Most of the Crawfords live on or near the family farm in Paris Township, Minerva.
The opening reception at the Market Street Art Spot at 217 North Market Street in Minerva, Ohio is from 5 to 9pm Friday, November 8 from 5 to 9pm. Jim Crawford, the patriarch of the Crawford family, is a self taught cabinet-maker and woodworker who does extensive reading and video research before each woodworking project. Many of his cabinets decorate the 19th Century farmhouse that Jimand Susan live in. Susan Crawford, the matriarch of the Crawford clan, is a painter, illustrator, calligrapher and Resident Artist at the Market Street Art Spot. She helped design many of the furniture pieces that Jim created and she enjoys bringing her love of literature and design into her artwork. The last several years she has often utilized wood left over from other projects in her illustrative pieces. Older son Ben Crawford owns Red Barn Home Furnishings and is a full time furniture designer and craftsman working out of his carpentry shop in the family barn on the Crawford homestead. He is also a sawyer and certified forestry consultant. His furniture is shown and marketed worldwide. Youngest son Evan Crawford is a self taught creative woodworker who sculpts his work based on what he envisions in the wood. He creates decorative wood pieces and furniture as well. Susan and Jim’s grandchildren, Maddie (age 12), Dan (age 8), and Jack (age 7) also create decorative work and several of their art pieces have been framed to display in this show. Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home will sponsor the November, 2019 opening reception and entertainment. This is the 106th consecutive featured artist opening on second Friday at the Market Street Art Spot. The acoustic group “One String Short” from Alliance will provide live music and vocals. In addition to the Crawford Family’s artwork in the Front Gallery, the Art Spot will feature the works of the Art Spot’s other Resident Artists, Anna Rather (printmaker, painter), Michelle Mulligan ( oil painter), Laura Donnelly (potter, painter), Marty Chapman (woodturner), and Judith Singer (raku potter). For more than eight years, The Art Spot has showcased the work of its Resident Artists and featured local artists as well as 30 to 35 Display Artists from across Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York.
Most of her current works, fashioned from stoneware and porcelain clays, are designed to be both functional and aesthetic to satisfy both sides of her artistic drive. She is inspired by her grandchildren, local flora and fauna, and her husband's music collection.
